Ottawa University was founded in 1865 with its roots tracing back to the Ottawa Indian tribe. Baptist missionaries worked with the tribe to significantly improve their lives. The work led to an agreement between the Ottawa Tribe and Kansas Baptist denomination to create a school that benefitted the Ottawa children. The growth of the college was slow in the early years, but by the mid 1920s, it had 500 students.

Throughout its history, OU strengthened its programs and consistently added new ones. By 1969, the university was home to more than 1,000 students. In the early 1970s, OU was recognized as one of the more innovative postsecondary schools. It was among the first institutions to welcome an increasing demand for programs specifically geared to meet the needs of adult students.

The first adult campus opened in Kansas City in 1974. An additional campus opened in Phoenix, Arizona in 1977. More locations were established in 1992 in Wisconsin and 2002 in Indiana. The OU Online division was launched in 2008 as well as an additional Arizona campus. Ottawa University maintains a strong relationship with the Ottawa Indians and any certified tribal member is able to attend any campus or online tuition-free. Today, Ottawa University is home to about 5,000 students across eight campuses and online. More than 22,000 graduates from OU have made significant contributions to their fields and society.
